Topic > International students in higher education: how to deal with them?

Having international students attend higher education here in the United States can be very beneficial not only to the college or university but also to other students who attend the school. International students help bring diversity to campus life. These students also help bring diverse and fresh perspectives to the classroom. Another benefit of having international students attend higher education here in the United States is that it helps increase people's tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of different countries and cultures around the world (Crowson, 2010, p . 413). International students may have difficulty adjusting to college or university when they first arrive here. Things like living on campus and discrimination, or perceived discrimination, can have a negative impact on students' experience with the college or university. For international students, living on campus can be difficult. Like anything else, when attending college or university for the first time, it can be difficult to adjust and can be a culture shock for the student. While living on campus for international students has the advantage of being in close proximity, it appears that more international students prefer to live off campus. International students would prefer to live off campus for several reasons. One reason may be that they believe the cost of living on campus is higher than that of living off campus (Poyrazli & Grahame, 2006, p. 34). International students believe that the school should change the prices for living on campus in a residence hall to be more competitive with off-campus housing, which would then help international students who come from a lower socioeconomic status and are unable to. ..... of paper ......and international students with information on how to find cheap items (Poyrazli & Grahame, 2006, p. 41). I think there are many other challenges and adjustments for international students when living on campus. It was very difficult and I couldn't find much information about the impact of international students living with other international students or the effects of living with students from the United States. I think when international students live with American students it can have a big impact on how the international student adjusts to being in the US, both positively and negatively depending on which roommate they might be assigned to live with . More research needs to be done on this to see what can be done to help improve international students' time spent in higher education in the United States.
