Although being single is not necessarily considered something new, it has never really been encouraged until recently, which is why it is very interesting and provides a new perspective regarding styles of life and life in South Africa. Frahm-Arp's article takes on more of an anthropological perspective as she writes in a more ethnographic manner, immersing herself in the South African culture that these women connect to to produce her best work. Through her studies, she found that many South African women have difficulty searching for and finding a suitable partner who meets their desired criteria. This is due to many of the urban pressures that South African women face today, thanks to factors such as modernization and globalisation. According to Frahm-Arp, these pressures include the desire to have sex before marriage, the costs of marriage, women's concentration on careers and religiosity. These main factors are some of the reasons why these women have decided that being single is a better choice for them, spiritually and for their bank accounts.
