Which character is the worst sinner? In most biblical contexts, sin is defined as any act that violates divine law, which is any law that comes directly from the will of God. The sin of negligent living, or venial sin, is any minor sin that does not involve a complete divorce from God. Most religions believe that venial sins do not lead to damnation but only ruin one's relationship with God. Although venial sin is only a small fracture in His eyes, it is very destructive and can lead someone to commit a of the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are classified into mortal sins that condemn the sinner to Hell after death if not forgiven. Simply, the seven sins are anger, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. In the novel The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, five of the seven sins are present. However, it could be argued that all of our main characters are present and focus on anger, pride, lust, sloth and envy. In retrospect, all of the main characters are atrocious sinners, but one of them continues to let their sin consume them. "But if ye do not so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord; be sure that your sin shall discover you" (The Bible, Numbers 32:23 KJV). Adultery is a sin considered immoral by most religions. The Puritans believed in the sanctity of marriage, for them adultery was an act punishable by death and some were executed for this sin. In Hester's case, she was forced to experience public humiliation for the rest of her existence. Hester had two incarnations of her sin that didn't make it easy for her to feel free from guilt. One of them is Pearl, his daughter with Dimmesdale. Like any mother, Hester loves Pearl unconditionally, but it is also her greatest sadness. His son... in the center of the sheet...... 179). This shows Dimmesdale's true colors, he constantly complains about how bad his life is, while Hester has been an outcast with their daughter for the past 7 years. years. Hester must show her sin to the world while Dimmesdale can hide and condemn himself to misery. Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Hester have all committed miserable sins, but there is one that stands out from the rest. Dimmesdale is the worst sinner. Unlike Hester, he does not grow from his sin. He doesn't learn his lesson and doesn't use the flaws of his past to become a better person. And unlike Chillingworth, he doesn't come forward with his sins. He continues to lie and becomes a grieving pastor with the fear of repentance. Dimmesdale is similar to people in modern society, they are afraid of being resented, so they keep their flaws a secret. Ultimately, this only hurts the sinner more.
