A discourse community is a group of people involved and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. In a discourse community, it is possible to get to know others and express the knowledge they are passionate about towards a certain topic. This is how people communicate and achieve their goals. Communicating with others is a great advantage, especially when trying to accomplish a certain task. In my community of practice talk, I found that being part of an organized group with a certain purpose, like volleyball, contributed to success in my life and on the court among my teammates. There are many particular aspects of volleyball that a player must adhere to, such as: the terminology, objectives and rules of the game. Being part of a volleyball talk community has taught me self-discipline and even how to get closer to the people on my team. In volleyball there are specific rules that each player and coach must follow. Few teams will recognize them and others may learn by experimenting with the rules in the game. The excellence in learning the rules of volleyball is for the player to know how to play with the team and recognize the calls that are made for future reference. Knowing the rules of the game can lead to a successful team. In addition to the rules of the game, the player must understand the terminology and language that only athletes of the sport can use. First of all, the terminology that a volleyball player learns is: passing, setting, hitting and learning to serve in the areas of the court. This results in a lesser chance for the defense to read the ball correctly to pass it to the setter, so that the setter can direct the ball to the hitters for a winning attack. Teammates can play an important role in this discursive community selection. When each player knows their role, the rest of the team can individually focus on their tasks without having to worry about everyone else. The athlete not only takes responsibility for his role, but also takes pride in it. Feeling good about the effort you and your team put in by simply communicating, sharing their thoughts, and completing their task translates into success. Playing volleyball with my teammates can be difficult at times, especially when we're not all on the same page, but it made me think about how important it is to base our game on each other. When it comes to setting goals, they can have a positive impact on your life and the people around you in your speech community. Just as John Swales states, “To determine whether a group or organization is a discursive community, it is necessary to see whether they have common goals.” Goals should be held to high but measurable and realistic standards. As a player, I have many goals that I set for myself in every game. My objectives are to get a certain number of kills, keep my head down.
