IndexBrief overviewAnalysisPersonal opinionBrief overview The film "The Black Balloon" is a family film released in 2008 by a good director, Elissa Down. This review is for all the movie critics out there who want to know my opinion on how the movie did. It is also aimed at those who want to know something about the film before watching it or are curious about the film, such as the genre and plot. This movie has 5 main actors, Thomas Mollison (Rhys Wakefield), Charlie Mollison (Luke Ford), Maggie Mollison (Toni Collette), Simon Mollison (Erik Thomson) and Jackie Master (Gemma Ward). Get an Original Essay Analysis The film begins with the Mollison family moving to a new town, ready for their new life. Thomas had a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders as his father is enlisted in the army and his mother is pregnant, so he was the only one to take care of his brother at home while his father was at work and his mother rested. We then see the behavior of Charlie (who is autistic) and how Thomas is very frustrated at having to juggle his social life with his frustrating life at home, having to deal with his brother. About a third of the way through the film, we learn about Thomas' school life and how everyone in his school makes fun of the students at the school Charlie goes to, just because they were born with a disability. However, they don't know that Thomas' brother Charlie goes there. So Thomas tries to keep a low profile and not let anyone know that he has an autistic brother. At this point in the film Thomas meets Jackie, one of his classmates from swimming class and he really likes her. However, Thomas is worried that Charlie is an embarrassment to him and that Jackie would not want to reciprocate him due to his brother's behavior. After Charlie's behavior begins to worsen and he crosses the line at Thomas's birthday party, in front of Jackie, Thomas decides he has had enough and confronts Charlie about it. This confrontation ends in chaos among the whole family who is waiting for a new addition to the family. Fear is one of the themes as Tom has always feared that people around him will always judge him due to the fact that his brother is autistic. Family is also a theme in the film "The Black Balloon". We know this by watching how Charlie's family supports him no matter what and is always there when people around Charlie judge him for having autism. Brotherhood: Tom, who is Charlie's brother, always supports Charlie and puts up with his behavior and even though he hates being Charlie's brother halfway through the film, he ends up loving his brother more than before. The Black Balloon is placed under the Drama, Romance and Independent movies category by the most authentic movie review websites like IMDB. I think this movie fits perfectly into the family genre category and not only focuses on a serious issue/message but also has some comedic scenes, romantic scenes and then some serious scenes as well. This film falls well into the drama category as the atmosphere of the film goes up and down like a roller coaster, making the film very dramatic, which people love because drama has a little bit of everything. One of the things I really liked was how the director portrayed the message of the film through drama and showed some comedic, romantic and serious scenes. The director could have made the film sad by simply showing the negative effects of autism on the family. This film features family drama, which is when there is a serious conflict between family members. Directors implement drama.
