Future research and treatment options will definitely be needed. Someone with a personality disorder, such as narcissistic personality disorder, might benefit from certain types of treatments. A person might start by attending group therapy. This will help them get to know others with the same disorder as them. Group therapy should have a broad spectrum of patients with personality disorders, from moderate to severe. Therapy with others could possibly show the person how serious this disorder can be if not properly treated or kept under control. If group therapy does not help as expected, the person can also begin individual therapy with a psychiatrist (in addition to continuing to attend group therapy). With individual therapy, the psychiatrist and the person suffering from the disorder can focus solely on themselves as the patient. This therapy can help them realize and change their extreme behaviors, help them establish good behaviors and how to properly handle situations where this disorder would make them act chaotically. (Stop exaggerating; be more humble, less defensive, etc.). In more severe cases, or in cases where they harm themselves, the psychiatrist should keep them monitored 24 hours a day for so many days or weeks. This can help the psychiatrist better understand what situations push the patient to harm himself, how he handles situations and how he behaves towards friends.
