Topic > The use of technology in teaching English - 2545

1 BackgroundTechnological improvement has gone hand in hand with the growth of English and has changed the way we communicate and learn. Furthermore, the way of teaching English has also been changed from time to time as information is easily collected and shared from all over the world. The spread of the Internet, email and other tools is beneficial to English teachers because the accessibility to teaching sources, media, techniques, methods and assessments is abundant and can be easily gathered anywhere and anytime moment. Since the traditional way of teaching has been considered irrelevant with the recent improvements in information and communication technology (Suryadi, 2008), educators are encouraged to use technological development in the teaching-learning process of English in the classroom. However, in Indonesia the awareness of the use of technology in teaching is still low as the availability of technology-based teaching aids (Wahid, 2008). Although 90% of high schools and 95% of vocational schools already have IT facilities, only 25% of high schools and 20% of vocational schools have access to the Internet (Mohandas, 2003) for teaching and learning activities . Furthermore, most English teachers in Indonesia prefer to use books as they are cheaper and more available than multimedia or technology which is considered expensive (Perkasa, 2011). While multimedia and other technological devices have beneficial effects for language learning due to the richness and authentic and comprehensible input they can provide (Brett, 1995; Egbert & Jessup, 1996; Khalid, 2001). Extensive research on the use of video as a multimedia tool has offered strong evidence that video can give students exposure to an authentic visual learning environment… middle of the paper… to teach any subject.
