The activation of the male sexual organs would be due to androgen hormones. Androgens are a major contributor to male sex hormones. Testosterone is the most commonly known active and abundant androgen hormone. Androsterone is an inactive androgen produced by testosterone metabolism and develops in the male testes. Androgens have the ability to influence several actions and desires in men. Usually, androgens are known as male hormones, although they are also found in women. Although it is not an androgen, many studies look at cortisol alongside androgens because cortisol is a response to stress, also known as the "get up and go" hormone. It gives men the courage to overcome challenges to achieve their goals. It seems that men take pride in having high levels of androgens because it makes a man “macho”. But what happens to androgen levels when these masculine men are exposed to situations where they are expected to act kindly? What happens at these levels when they perform a task that is considered non-masculine? For example, do androgen hormone levels increase or decrease when men are in a relationship or become fathers? It is hypothesized that androgen levels are lower in men who are in committed relationships and/or in men who are fathers. Perhaps this is caused by stress from or lack of stress from being in a relationship or being a father. In this article we will discuss the effects of stress on men and their androgen levels, determine how being in a committed relationship can affect androgen levels, determine whether or not sexual orientation is a factor in these effects, and finally examine how it can be effective being a father or wanting to be one... middle of paper ...... many hypotheses were examined in this study and it is not clear what exactly this difference was. The data did not show whether heterosexual or homosexual men had an effect, if any, on androgen levels during a relationship. In both studies it is clear that sexual orientation has an effect on androgen levels in men who are in a relationship. Perhaps this is because men cannot reproduce with another man and know that they cannot have a child naturally in a same-sex relationship. It is possible that subconsciously these men are still looking for a mate who can achieve their ultimate goal of reproducing. Unfortunately, there have not been many detailed studies on the effects of sexual orientation on androgen levels in men in relationships. In contrast, many studies have been conducted on the effects of androgen levels in fathers.
