Urban Dictionary defines hate as "not to love intensely or passionately." In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, hatred is the major culprit for the events that take place during the play. The hatred between the Capulets and the Montagues causes the death of Romeo and Juliet, which proves that hate is a more powerful emotion than love. The hatred between the two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, makes Romeo and Juliet love each other so much that they kill each other. . Juliet meets Romeo at the Capulet ball and falls in love with him. Juliet discovers that Romeo is a Montague and says to herself: “O Romeo, Romeo! why are you Romeo? Deny your father and reject your name! Or, if you will not, swear to me my love and I will no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.35). The opposition between the two families leads Romeo and Juliet to see each other secretly. This shows that hatred puts Romeo and Juliet's lives at risk, leading to their deaths. Later in the story, Romeo commits suicide because he couldn't resist missing his true love. When Juliet wakes up, she finds Romeo's corpse lying on the floor: “What is here? a cup, closed in the hand of my true love? Poison, I see, was his timeless end. Oh lout! I drank it all and left no one to help me after? I will kiss your lips. It may be that there is still some poison that will make me die with a remedy” (5.3.175). This quote shows that Romeo thought that Juliet was actually dead, so he killed himself because he couldn't live without her. This shows how serious Romeo and Juliet are in Nagao 2 about their love for each other. Furthermore, the hatred between the two families could not stop their passionate love. Later, when he wakes up and finds Romeo dead, he kills himself because there is a piece of paper that he can't write. But come, young wavering one, come with me. In a way I will be your assistant; Because this alliance can prove so happy that it transforms the resentment of your families into pure love” (2.3.95). This quote shows that the hatred between the two families does not allow Romeo and Juliet to like each other so Friar Lawrence has to keep the secret but he also thinks it is a good idea but in the end Friar Lawrence planning their escape causes Juliet's death. Hatred is mostly responsible for the events that happen throughout the show. The fact that the Montagues and Capulets harbored hatred caused the death of many people and ended badly. If there had been no hatred between the two families, this would not have happened and everyone would have lived happily and peacefully. Furthermore, the two lovers would have lasted longer if the two families had not had hatred.
