John Hopkins Hospital AnalysisExecutive Summary.John Hopkins Hospital was founded by John Hopkins, a philanthropist and Quaker by faith in 1867 and endowed in 1873. He dedicated his life and his finances approximately $7,000,000 in cash to build a teaching hospital and university named after him to combine patient care functions with education and research. John Hopkins Hospital officially opened on May 7, 1889. Before he died in 1973, Mr. Hopkins had pledged himself to the principle of "united we stand and divided we fall" and had selected the board of trustees of the hospital and university who entrusted him with tasks and responsibilities to realize his vision. On March 10, 1873, he put in black and white that the hospital must provide “for the indigent patients of the city of Baltimore without distinction of sex, age or color who may require surgical or medical treatment.” In his letter he also specified that the school of nursing and medicine will have to be established in collaboration with the hospital. Looking at it today, John Hopkins Hospital has evolved into one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country. It includes more than 12 small hospitals and medical centers affiliated with the main hospital in Baltimore, 226 clinical services, 977 licensed beds and 37 buildings in the state of Maryland. Johns Hopkins Hospital and the School of Medicine are the founding institutions of modern American medicine and the birthplace of many medical traditions, including department visits, residency programs, and housekeeping. Many medical specialties including Harvey Neuroscience, Blalock Cardiac Surgery, Urology, Endocrinology, Paediatrics and Kanner Child Psychiatry were founded in this hospital... at the center of the paper... hospital that are capable of providing exceptional patient care at a low or lower cost.
