What's the big deal about stem cell research? I believe that one day stem cell research will be more accepted than it is now and will have a positive impact on the way healthcare treats patients. Stem cell research has the potential to one day cure a number of diseases and conditions that are currently incurable. Stem cell research is currently being used in a variety of therapeutic cloning and other treatment methods. Therapeutic cloning is a method of producing stem cell lines that genetically match adults and children. Stem cells can be used to generate an organ or tissue that genetically matches the skin cell donor. This medical procedure can potentially cure patients with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease. Scientists see great value in using embryonic stem cell research to help understand human growth and development and to understand the growth and treatment of disease. In some of my research I found that some of the problems that have arisen are related to funding and ethics. These two problems can lead to heavy delays in research. Controversy comes into play regarding embryonic cells, which are the third source of stem cells. Cells are removed from an embryo before the cells begin to divide. The controversy around this type of extraction is so great because ultimately the embryo is destroyed during the process. This procedure is not liked by some people because a human life has been destroyed, which can be seen as murder. Additionally, stem cells have, over time, developed abnormalities that create cancer cells, so some believe the research is futile. This type of procedure requires a close… half of paper… articulation before the research can begin. further. Understanding all aspects of stem cell replication and understanding immune system rejection are two steps that must be overcome before research can go further. Once ethical and scientific circumstances are balanced, stem cell research will be a positive step forward in healthcare. Works Cited “Genetic Science Learning Center.” nd Stem cells in use.
