Beginning in December 2013, there has been ethnic and political conflict in the nascent nation of South Sudan. The United States supported South Sudan in its efforts for autonomy in 2011 and was the first after Sudan to recognize it as a nation. At this point the question of interest arises. Why is the global community worried about South Sudan? Although some South Sudanese government officials believe the United States is trying to influence the outcome of ongoing peace talks, the United States and other nations insist on participation due to civil unrest and violence in South Sudan. These issues could undermine the stability of the region because of its central location and because political desires and corruption are causing conflict in an already unstable nation that has essentially stopped oil production in the Abyei and Upper Nile region, causing further economic instability. However, the United States is not the only nation interested in this region. China is now the largest investor in South Sudan's oil sector and, for this reason, has concerns about the stability of the region. Besides China, Sudan and other countries in the Horn of Africa also play a role in the peace talks as they both have economic interests in the young nation. Aside from economic issues, the United Nations is concerned about refugees displaced by violence.
