In the being stage, the therapeutic recreation specialist should unconditionally accept and welcome the client to build his or her innate sense of self. During the becoming phase the therapeutic recreation specialist should model morally responsible behavior and provide opportunities for clients to become more rational, honest, just, and independent (Weiss 23). In essence, in the phase of being and becoming, the therapeutic recreation specialist should serve as a role model for the individual with a disability and guide him or her towards understanding what the basis of his or her self-esteem should be. In the acquisition phase, the therapeutic recreation specialist should act as a guide, helping the individual to understand the multifaceted nature of self-esteem and teaching him that he is responsible for developing his own self-esteem. During the different phases, the therapeutic recreation specialist must focus on creating an overall sense of self for the individual; the more complete and balanced the individual's self-esteem is, the more likely he will be able to resist adversity and solve problems that arise as a result of his conduct.
