Ben Kaplan 3/11/14APUSH Biography of Dr. SeussMorgan, Neil and Judith Dr. Seuss and Mr. Geisel: A Biography. New York, NY: De Capo Press, 1996 (Kindle / iPhone Editions)Born and raised in Springfield Massachusetts, Theodor Geisel was born on March 2, 1904. Under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss, Ted managed to realize his dream of becoming one writer after attending Dartmouth College and writing for the school newspaper: the Jack-O-Lantern. After graduation, Geisel went to Oxford where he earned a doctorate in English literature and was inspired to become an English teacher and writer. Some of Dr. Seuss' works include Horton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, and The Cat in the Hat. Over the course of his life, Dr. Seuss won three Academy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, as well as numerous degrees and other awards. Dr. Seuss was not only a highly acclaimed children's book writer as he is popularly known, but Ted Geisel is also known for his work during the World War II era. He created hundreds of political cartoons in which he voiced his opinions on topics such as war bonds and the war itself. Ted Geisel is an author who has successfully revolutionized the way children read books through the creation of new “Seussian” words, interesting rhyme schemes, and stories with meanings far beyond what they appear to represent at first glance. Geisel managed to enlist the help of most of the United States during World War II through the publication of cartoons and films. The biography I read, titled Dr. Seuss & Mr. Geisel: A Biography by Judith and Neil Morgan, did a great job showcasing the brilliant life and achievements of Theodor Geisel as well as those of his other character: Dr. Seuss . The reason I say... middle of paper... is that Dr. Seuss won numerous academic awards as a film producer and screenwriter. Soon after, Dr. Seuss began writing children's stories, beginning with Horton Hears a Who in 1954 which sparked the creation of 46 other children's stories from which most of Dr. Seuss' fame originated. Theodor Geisel was able to gain the help of the nation through his war efforts and maintain his beliefs in a time of great difficulty in our nation. As a result, Dr. Seuss came out of World War II as a famous writer who had no limits when it came to his work and thus was able to continue to produce and create extraordinary stories with deep meaning, for his target audience of children. This was done so successfully that Seuss is still known today for many of his works, adapted into films but also read to millions and millions of children every night..
