Topic > How to reduce carbon emissions to comply with new UK law

1.0 Executive SummaryClimate change has been a major topic of debate in the UK in recent years. The need to reduce the impact of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHG) on the environment has driven the UK Government to legislate (e.g. the Climate Change Act 2008) and impose stringent regulations on businesses to reduce emissions. These actions have forced companies from a wide range of industrial sectors to rethink and rework their strategies for using energy, transport and land efficiently, which in turn has led to innovative and at the same time simple but effective to reduce carbon emissions. The purpose of this report is to briefly explain to the Senior Management of a hypothetical company in the supply chain how carbon emissions are being reduced. This report is structured to cover all areas of logistics management from the procurement of raw materials from suppliers to the distribution of finished products to end customers. And it explains how companies in different industrial sectors reduce their carbon emissions. 2.0 Suppliers: Collaborating to Reduce Carbon Emissions Companies are starting to realize that every item they purchase from suppliers has a global environmental impact, and with careful sourcing, they can reduce their use of fossil fuels. and consequently save money (Wisner et al, 2009). This has led many companies to make self-imposed commitments and long-term strategies to protect the environment by forming strategic alliances with suppliers. But only a few manage to achieve their goals. A survey conducted by Accenture shows that only one in ten companies actively models the carbon footprint of their supply chain and has implemented successful sustainability initiatives (Accenture, 2009).
