Topic > A quick note on safety and injury prevention

We have studied several human factors topics this semester. These topics range from stressors and safety, to display types and control systems. All these ideas and concepts play a role in our daily lives and most of the time we wouldn't even think about them during the design process. Especially when in the 21st century all that matters is making cutting-edge, breathtaking products. But none of that matters when a user sits in a chair for less than thirty minutes and feels uncomfortable. In this article I will focus on two of the topics that I found most interesting: Security and Automation. I'll describe the main concepts, give examples, connect them to the real world and design, and then talk about what they mean. The first topic I want to analyze is "Safety and accident prevention". Safety has been a major focus of human factors improvement. We want to increase the safety of people in many different environments, not just at work. An important concept in safety is legislation. These legislations are made to ensure people's safety even if it means reducing productivity and increasing costs. The first major safety agency was the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA. OSHA was founded in 1970 after a fire in New York's garment district killed more than 146 people in less than 15 minutes. Due to this terrible accident, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed to impose certain safety standards on industries. OSHA performs a variety of duties, including implementing safety programs, setting and revoking health and safety standards, conducting inspections, investigating problems, issuing citations, filing of petitions to the co...... middle of paper ......and burns from coffee that he didn't know was hot. And now every cup of coffee served at McDonald's contains that warning. However, this is just an example of a warning label. Warning labels must include four pieces of information: a warning that communicates the severity, a description of the hazard, the consequences associated with the hazard, and the behavior necessary to avoid the hazard. The signal word should be danger, warning or caution, where danger is used with warnings that could result in serious injury or death and caution is used for actions that could cause minor personal injury. The company must decide which keyword to use for the warning. Consumers have been found to have difficulty distinguishing between keywords, so engineers commonly put more information on the label than necessary to increase understanding.
