Considering Slim's enormous size and muscular build, he would complete the job on the ranch in no time, but instead chooses to handle everything delicately and take his time. In one part of the book Steinbeck says “His hands, large and thin, were as delicate in their action as those of a temple dancer” (34). This quote shows how Slim's size and his job are at odds with each other, although he is strong he handles his job delicately, using his skills to the best of his ability. Slim can be related to an artist, because like an artist he carefully completes his assignment aiming with passion
