There are many different views on the issue of genetic modification of foods around the world; some in support, some against and some uncertain. Although people have all these different views on genetically modified foods, many don't truly understand what these genetically modified foods are and what they mean for their health, environment, and society. The original idea of genetically modified foods was to alter food through genetic engineering to create specific changes in its DNA. The reason why GM foods were created was to increase the production of farmers' crops so they could have a larger harvest and greater profit. Another reason genetically modified foods were created was to make food last longer on supermarket shelves and therefore save money. There are many concerns that arise from GM foods, including health, environmental and social concerns. The main health issues that concern people are the possibility of inadvertent changes occurring in the food that is modified. Another health concern is that genetically modified foods may contain allergens. “After a protein is produced, the cell modifies it in various ways. The protein can be modified in the genetically modified plant differently than it would be in an unmodified cell, and the modification could produce an allergen." (Goodenough & McGuire, 2012) To prevent these allergens, scientists perform many rigorous tests. Environmental concerns that have emerged include the problem of insecticides harming insects to keep them away from ... middle of paper ... ...modified foods around the world. There has been much debate about whether genetically modified foods are good or bad for our health, the environment and society. Ever since genetic engineering allowed humans to modify our food, there has been a wide variety of opinions about genetically modified foods. Genetically modified foods will always be a concern no matter what we know they do positively and negatively because you can't please everyone. Bibliography1. Belk. C. and Borden, V. (2009).
