This literature review will include the following: (a) a historical overview, (b) the importance of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) national model, (c ) educate principals to work with professional school counselors (d) critical incidents that shape principals' perceptions, (e) actual and preferred tasks of professional school counselors, and (f) the importance of professional school counselors advocating for themselves. We conclude with discussions and fruitful areas for future research. Research Question Are the principles significant to the identity of the professional school counselor (PSC). The principals are responsible for defining the tasks actually assigned to the PSC. This review will examine principal perceptions that limit the role of the professional school counselor in the school. Purpose This review will examine the principal's perception of the role of the professional school counselor and its impact on assigned duties. Conceptual Framework Professional school counselors are often assigned inappropriate counseling duties. According to ASCA (2004) these included: “registering and scheduling all new students, calculating grade point averages, signing excuses for students who are late or absent, carrying out disciplinary actions, sending home students who are not dressed appropriately… .(p.3 ).
