Based on the trends of Filipino immigration to the United States, the United States can be classified into four different time periods starting in the mid-1700s to the present day (Herrera page 1) . These immigration trends are essential to understanding the nature of immigrants arriving in the United States. The first wave of Filipino-American immigrants dates back to 1763-1906. This group was made up of young workers from Manila, who hoped to escape the surveillance of the Spanish colonists as they were treated badly and often injured. In their escape to the United States, they sought better and more exciting lives working as crewmen, sailors, and domestic workers. The second wave, from 1906 to 1934, consisted of uneducated Filipinos and single men from more rural areas of the Philippines who worked as farmers, laborers, housekeepers, military personnel, and janitors. The last wave of immigrants dates back to 1945-1965 and this group consisted of war veterans, retired military personnel, families and students who were easily accepted into middle class society in the United States due to their ability to communicate and engage civically with their community that earned them status (Herrera, pg
