It is obvious that over time and history, the way health issues are addressed changes depending on the religious, philosophical, social and scientific perceptions of the individual. Each culture has its own value, theory, language, dialect and acceptable rules of behavior. In ancient times it was believed that the cause of health or disease came from metaphysical and unreal elements, e.g. spirits and gods. Each culture approaches its health issues differently. Many different cultures find it difficult to trust Western medicine because for years they have had folk healers providing them with medical care. The ancient Greeks were the first to realize and document that both health and disease are the result of natural processes. In the 17th century Descartes considered that organic functions are not influenced by the soul but also that the human body is considered as a machine that when this machine does not work properly, the person gets sick, so he explained that the soul and the body are influenced differently by each other. During the 18th century, the field of health developed with the discovery of vaccines. Louis Pasteur in the 19th century with the microbial theory rejected the fact that the environment was a key factor in causing disease. The German Virchow (1821 – 1902) also argued that socioeconomic factors play an important role in the onset of a disease. And so in the 20th century we have a significant reduction in infant mortality and an increase in human life expectancy.
