In all of Shakespeare's plays, 13 characters commit suicide. The two most famous are the two star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet. In his work, Shakespeare loved to use literary devices such as characters. A foil is a character created to contrast another character in order to highlight that character's actions or personality. This literary device allows bad characters to be more evil and good characters to be saints. Three pairs of characters in Romeo and Juliet are Benvolio and Tybalt, Mercutio and Friar Laurence, and Lady Capulet and the Nurse. Benvolio is the keeper of the peace in Romeo and Juliet. He is a friend of Romeo and Mercutio and is the nephew of Lord Montague. In the story, Benvolio is not the type to take part in the clashes between the two families. Only after being provoked in the first scene does he fight Tybalt. She also tries to help Romeo when he is depressed about Rosaline by making him try to be interested in other girls. Benvolio does not provoke Romeo for his love, unlike Mercutio. After the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio, Benvolio tells the truth about what happened to the Prince. Benvolio tells him, "This is the truth, or let Benvolio die," meaning that Benvolio would rather die than lie about the battle. This demonstrates his commitment to truth and justice, making him a selfless character. Tybalt is an aggressive, quick-tempered character and very willing to fight. He is Juliet's cousin and Lady Capulet's nephew. His stubbornness gets him into trouble with the Capulets especially during the party when he sees Romeo and wants to fight and kill him even when Romeo means no harm. Tybalt is a character who gets into many fights and angers many people, including Mercutio who Tybalt kills. Tybalt is therefore... the center of the card... or has both negative and positive friends who influence him. He may have felt pressured to prove that his love is faithful to Mercutio when Mercutio says that Rohemo's love will never be reciprocated. Friar Laurence supports his decisions more than Mercutio, but still warns him not to rush into his affair. Readers can empathize with Romeo and the way his friends react to him: some are cruel in their criticism and others are positive and caring. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy about two teenage lovers who die due to the actions of their feuding families. It has a wide range of characters with a wide range of personalities that we can learn from. The characters in the story can teach us to be aware of the impact we have on the world around us. Three pairs of contrasting characters: Mercutio and Friar Laurence, the Nurse and Lady Capulet, and Tybalt and Benvolio, all have an impact on the story and its readers.
