In its simplest form, crime is an illegal action that societies do not support and for which the government punishes. Crimes and the criminal justice system are witnessed by society every evening news and in every newspaper. The answer to crime seems to be more punishment, more security and, of course, more prisons. To deal with crime, the best way is imprisonment because prisons have many missions such as; punishment, deterrence and rehabilitation and also do a lot to solve crime problems using these missions. Therefore, to keep criminals away from society, prisons play an essential role. Some people support the idea that the prison system should be removed. They believe that prisons are not a solution to crimes; therefore, they argue that instead of imprisonment, rehabilitation centers used to teach people how to live a more satisfying life should be used. Additionally, they say detainees may be deprived of some rights such as working for government security and some freedom rights. However, their opinion on this issue is insufficient, since this solution is not very effective. The reason is that rehabilitation cannot work for some people who pose a threat to society. Pollock (2006), in his book “Prisons Today and Tomorrow” emphasizes that there are no panaceas and that no treatment modality or approach will be successful with all prisoners because treatment programs are only one part of the prisoner's life (p.183 ). . As Pollock stated, rehabilitation cannot be effective for everyone. It may depend on the psychology of the criminal because some inmates like to victimize other people. For example, the Zodiac Killer, a serial killer, who operated in California, took responsibility for killing up to thirty-seven people. He said... in the middle of the paper... Furthermore, by staying away from the prisoners' friends and family, they could learn the value of family. Towl (2003) stated that prison provides opportunities to enhance inmates' abilities to serve as productive members of their families upon release (p.149). Prisoners live away from the support of society, family or friends and also from lack of communication, so they learn the value of social life. Consequently, the atmosphere of prisons has social effects and psychological effects on offenders. All in all, prisons are places where criminals are held as punishment for the illegal acts they have committed. Even some people say they are unnecessary and that other institutions should be used in their place, incarcerating violent criminals away from society and having a powerful deterrent effect on prisoners. Therefore, they play an essential role and should remain.
