The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible both provide similarities on characters within the Puritan community. Both books reveal similarities between Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter and John Proctor in The Crucible. Hester Prynne and John Proctor are not physically similar, but they are similar in some ways because their beliefs and emotions towards Puritan law influence their reputations and determine the outcome of their future. Hester Prynne and John Proctor are not physically similar but both characters feel guilty for committing adultery, they show integrity, they are courageous and their deaths have left a legacy. Because the Puritans believed it was wrong to commit adultery, Hester feels guilty. It is Puritan law that makes Hester Prynne a sinner. That's why he wears the letter A on his chest. «After a moment, however, judging wisely that one sign of his shame would not serve to hide another, he took the child on his arm and with a fiery blush, yet a haughty smile and a look that did not want to be embarrassed turned to his fellow citizens and neighbors. On the breast of his robe, in fine red cloth, surrounded by elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A” (Hawthorne 50). Although Hester accepts the Puritan's punishment such as putting her in prison and standing on the gallows, she does not allow her emotions to show outwardly. Instead he keeps the guilt he feels inside in the same way that John Proctor hides his guilt from the Puritan community. Because John Proctor cheats on his wife Elizabeth Proctor with Abigail Williams, he feels just as guilty as Hester. When Hale asks John to recite the Ten Commandments, John says everything except that thou shalt not commit…middle of the paper…it took a long time for the truth to be revealed in the Scarlet Letter. , Hester leaves behind a legacy of courage for being the mother of the product of a sin and for loving a symbol that represents her sin. Although John Proctor refuses to have his name posted in the Puritan community for citizens to see the crime he committed, his death is proof that he truly cared about the injustice in Puritan society among the wealthy guilty of witchcraft. but they were not accused and the average poor people who were innocent but were accused and prosecuted. Both Arthur Miller and Nathaniel Hawthorne show readers through Hester Prynne and John Proctor that these characters made mistakes and had the integrity to face punishment from the Puritan community. Therefore both characters are significant in many ways to show readers how similar they are.
