RadioShack: You've Got MailRadioShack Corporation's reputation has suffered in the past due to a poorly handled company-wide layoff that used email to notify employees of their termination. Poor communications choices used while handling mass layoffs brought national attention to RadioShack. Many people felt that email was a dehumanizing method of informing employees that they were about to be fired (RadioShack, 2006). RadioShack's current stock price of $13.21 indicates that the corporate turnaround implemented by the CEO at the time of the layoffs, Julian Day, has not been successful (RSH, 2011). Due to changes in the economy and business strategy it is impossible to place total blame on the dismissal of email as the culprit for RadioShack's declining success. However, the national coverage of this event and the surprised response it elicited among management specialists indicate that this was not a popular decision (RadioShack, 2006). To regain favorable public opinion, RadioShack must mitigate the damage that has already occurred from this decision and integrate policies and procedures that prevent situations like these from happening again. Cleaning Up the PastRadioShack must reassure the public that future major transactions regarding the well-being of its employees will be done in a discreet and thoughtful manner. In a survey conducted by the Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame in 2008, only 6% of Americans felt that quitting via email was appropriate behavior (O'Rourke, 2011). If a representative group of Americans didn't think it was appropriate to resign from a job using email, they would undoubtedly not think an organization should fire an individual via email. The ... half of the document ... the press release should also include the ethics statement integrated into the guiding principles and resolution procedure; this will reflect RadioShack's sincere desire to regain public favor. These documents will also ensure that future communications with employees are tactical and defined. Works Cited Code of Ethics. (2007). Corporate governance: Code of Ethics.
