Gender plays an important role in society. It emphasizes men, women, their actions and how they should behave according to society's perception (Gender Roles & Differences, 2014). Being male or female is an essential aspect that makes up and helps individuals with their personality and how they feel about themselves. Gender identity is how someone defines themselves or how they identify. Children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years are aware of their gender identity (Understanding Gender, 2014). Gender is something that is learned as individuals age due to what they are taught and different interactions. For some people, gender identity isn't the most important thing. same as their biological or anatomical sex. This is a disorder also known as gender identity disorder (Understanding Gender, 2014). This condition is a disorder or state of confusion because the person acts or presents themselves to represent the opposite sex in society. Identity, so far, can be continually modified through appearance depending on the life experiences a person goes through. Any event such as birth, death, physical or mental abuse, marriage, divorce, traumatic stress are examples that can influence change for some. So who in society is considered to have GID? There is no exact cause, but several theories have been suggested that include life experiences such as social factors or even hormonal influences (Boys Don't Cry, Gender Identity Disorder, 2012). A person with GID usually shows symptoms of his passion for the opposite sex. For example, he began dressing like the opposite sex, developing speech patterns, and showing dislike for his own genitals. After the film was made, there were 43 award winners, including the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film, and 27 nominations. (Wikipedia, Boys Don't Cry, 2014) "Boys Don't Cry" received major awards and nominations, but it also received extreme controversy. .Brandon Teena's family and those involved in the actual murder did not appreciate the way the film portrayed their characters. (Wikipedia, Boys Don't Cry, 2014) Lana Tisdel stated that she did not continue a relationship with Brandon after finding out he was a girl. Brandon's mother claimed that Brandon's actions were a defense mechanism because she had been sexually molested as a child. Controversy aside, the film's success plays an important role in the psychological concept we know as gender identity. "Boys Don't Cry" explains Brandon Teena's life and how he expressed his sense of self.
