Research Paper on Racial Profiling Racial profiling is the process of judging individuals based on their skin color in a systematic way. It's like ordering ice cream by color and not flavor. Racial profiling is an essential tool in our efforts to protect ourselves, however it violates the rights of the individual and should never be tolerated. Racial profiling is common among African Americans. In the article “Black Men in Public Spaces,” Brent Staples shares a personal narrative about how people see Black men, moreover, himself, and how this makes him feel. It all began late one evening, when Staples was walking in a wealthy neighborhood. There was a white woman walking directly in front of him. When he turned and saw Staples, he started walking quickly. After taking a few more glances at Staples, the lady ran. Throughout Staple's life he had encountered many problems related to being stereotyped. He shares multiple experiences where people were afraid of him and suspected him of being a rapist, robber, criminal etc. He wasn't sure why he was perceived this way, but then thought it was because of his color. Even though he wasn't part of any gang and was one of the good guys, people still feared him. Staples didn't want people to be afraid of him anymore, so he changed his appearance and his routine of doing things. He wore work clothes and took precaution during his evening walks, and eventually began humming and whistling Beethoven. After the changes in his appearance, people were less afraid and he felt better about himself for not being considered a criminal because of his color. Unfortunately, after 9/11 racial profiling became a big problem not only for African Americans, but also for African Americans. more minority......half of paper......storage.
