Topic > Journey Home Introduction - 997

The Journey Home is an autobiographical book by an American Swami, taking readers on a profound journey to self-realization. The story follows 19-year-old Richard Slavin as he lives with his parents in Chicago, Illinois and tries to understand the purpose of life. In the 1960s, when Richie turns nineteen, he begins to desire a purpose in life that goes beyond wealth, prestige and the passing fads of society. He could not live at peace with himself knowing that African Americans are imprisoned as slaves in ghettos just a few miles away. He begins to participate in the civil rights movement together with his best friend Gary. While trying to understand the problems of this world, he decides to go to college in Florida and chooses philosophy as his major. After attending Miami Dade College for a year, Gary offers Richard a free trip to Europe for the entire summer. He immediately accepts the offer without even asking his parents' permission first, because he feels that it is his destiny that is calling him. Thus begins the journey of personal fulfillment, which transforms a naive young boy into one of India's most famous spiritual masters. The first country they go to in Europe is Luxembourg. Richie and Gary, both searching for themselves, begin visiting cathedrals, hippie places and holy places. The search for purpose doesn't end in Luxembourg, with a hunger for meaning in life and a blues harmonica, they backpack through the Middle East and beyond, where they are forced to face life-threatening situations. Since both Richie and Gary do not have a sufficient amount of money, they decide to spend the rest of their days on the island called Crete taking refuge in a cave. They agree to stay apart for a few dedicated days…middle of the paper…however, the book “The Journey Home” has also removed my confusion and now I see God everywhere in each of us. It really helped me open my eyes and see the world with more compassion, love and forgiveness. He taught me the essence of spirituality as well as the importance of helping other people and seeing every living being with an equal vision. This book also showed me what is possible when you truly want to know God and how God will lead you towards Him. It is indeed very amazing how a young boy from Chicago, Illinois, after embarking on a spiritual journey, became in less than two years one of the most famous Hindu monks in the world. The book “The Journey Home” is not only easy to read and difficult to put down, but the wisdom and insights shared along the way are sublime. I felt myself growing every time I read the book as I experienced his journey with him.
