As living standards improve due to advances in nutrition and healthcare and overall living conditions around the world, the population also increases as more and more people they live longer in all age groups. of these we have a large population of elderly people around the world as most people are living longer. As these groups age they become helpless, some are unable to work and while others fall ill with diseases such as Alzheimer's. The responsibility for caring for them now falls into the hands of their immediate relatives and, in some cases, extended family and/or the government, depending on the culture. However, to ensure outcome-oriented care, government and family need to work together, and culture can influence family commitment to elder care. Determining who is old might be difficult at times considering that some people might still be strong and agile in old age. So the World Health Organization developed a standard to determine who should be considered elderly. As a result, the world body states that “Although there are commonly used definitions of old age, there is no general agreement on the age at which a person ages… but the limit agreed upon by the United Nations is over 60 years to refer to the elderly population” ( World Health Organization). This research will examine two cultures and their way of caring for the elderly; the people of Kuwait and the people of Allahabad, a city located in India. Kuwaitis come from the Middle East and are predominantly Muslim, 95% of Kuwaitis practice the Islamic religion, consequently their lifestyle is mostly oriented towards the Islamic code of conduct with a mixture of Western culture due to colonization by the English. While Allahabad is one... middle of paper..., professionals can still appeal to family members to make the social life of the elderly in the nursing home comfortable and without the thought of loneliness which can create depression. In order to ensure result-oriented elderly care, the family will always play an important role in the care of the elderly, even if the government or company intervenes to help and ensure the commitment of family members, the culture will always have a powerful influence that would make a family member commit to caring for their elders.
