Edgar Allan Poe is and was an extraordinary American poet and writer. He wrote many famous poems. Poe was also part of the American Romantic movement genre that involved many other writers (Poemhunter). Edgar Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts (Academy of American Poets). Poe was the second son of Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. He had an older brother William Henry Leonard Poe and a younger sister Rosalie Poe (Poemhunter). Shortly after Poe's birth, his father abandoned them and his mother died of pulmonary tuberculosis (Poemhunter). Poe was then taken into foster care (Academy of American Poets). Poe ended up in the house of John Allan, where he took his middle name Allan and became Edgar Allan Poe although the Allans never formally adopted him (Poemhunter). The family was quite wealthy in their eyes and could afford to send Poe to the best schools in the area. Poe attended school in Irvine, Scotland for a short time in 1815, then studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until the summer of 1817 (Poemhunter).
