When I write a textbook for New York State, I would target it at college students who want to become elementary school teachers. It's nearly impossible as an elementary school teacher to know everything there is to know about New York State when they teach other subjects on top of that. When I think as a teacher, I think it would be a good idea to break the book down by topic/time period. For example, Industrialization, Immigration, and Antebellum Reform (1825-1860) would be the chapter title and thus the history of New York during that period. It would be a complete history of New York from the years 1825 to 2001, making it a part two textbook. Along with information about each topic/time period, such as important events and people, I think it would be great for teachers to have resources to allow students to further explore a topic they are interested in, whether it be a museum, websites (virtual tours), videos, etc. This would be extremely beneficial for teachers because technology now plays a big role in teaching, so I think it would be helpful for teachers to know about these resources. Students will also definitely benefit from these extra resources. When it comes to learning about the history of New York State, I feel it should coincide with New York State standards and what elementary school teachers should teach their students. I would use this as guidelines for how much depth I need to get for each topic taught. Overall, I think it is important to create a textbook that is a great resource for teachers to learn about New York State and have a clear understanding of what needs to be taught at the elementary level.
