THE STRUCTURE OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEMThe nervous system is the processing system of the human body responsible for coordination of movement and the ability to respond to stimuli, intelligence, self-awareness, thinking and of emotions. The nervous system is divided into two main divisions that coordinate and work together. The two divisions are: • Central nervous system (CNS) • Peripheral nervous system (PNS) The nervous system is composed of many nerve cells known as neurons, whose function is to carry nerve impulses (electrical signals). All neurons have three main parts; Axon, dendrite and cell body respectively. • Axon: is a filament that conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body. A group of axons in the central nervous system is known as a tract, while a group of axons in the central nervous system is known as a nerve. (The central nervous system, 2014). The axons are covered by a myelin sheath which improves the speed of impulse transmission. • Cell body: The cell body contains the nucleus of the cell. It secretes enzymes that maintain the life of the cell. (The central nervous system, 2014)• Dendrites: it is a filament that with...
