Pay to play? Introduction Imagine you are a troubled kid growing up in a gang-controlled neighborhood. You live day by day without knowing if today is the last day for you or your family. Now imagine someone tells you that they can give your family some money to help them get out of the neighborhood and into a safe place. You have a scholarship to a major university and if you work hard you will become a professional and earn millions of dollars a year. But you can't bear to see your family suffer much longer, so you take some money and use it to keep your family safe. Now that same university is sanctioning you and the person who gave you the money. They are withdrawing your scholarship and now no other college in the country will accept you. Now you're back to square one and don't know how to do anything else. That's the problem with college sports these days, too many struggling kids are busting their asses to stay out of trouble during their childhood and keep up with their sport just so they can play for a college and in return they can go to school for free. What about the other things they need? Should they just live their lives off free tuition at a university? According to USA Today, kids who participate in college athletics spend an average of more than 43 hours per week on their sport and spend an average of 38 hours per week on academics (USAtoday). However, NCAA rules state that a university is not permitted to have more than 20 hours of practice per week, regardless of what sport it is. Even with this illegal workload imposed on these kids, players are still expected to follow every other rule enforced by the NCAA. This implies that they wear the same clothes as before... middle of paper... k because it gives money to those who really need it. These young people dedicate more than 80 hours a week to sports and schoolwork, and even though $2,000 is less than the minimum wage, the scholarships cover their lives and education so the money goes towards any individual need.
