Herbivore: GoatFood eaten: Grass, herbs, tree leaves, and other plant material. (Anon., 1999) Dental formula and total dentition: diphyodont dentition Deciduous 0 0 33 1 3 = 10 Permanent 0 0 3 33 1 3 3 (Rouge, 2001) How the animal adapts to its diet in terms of: Shape and size of the teeth: goats mostly have molars because they are grazers. They use their upper lip to move food. Length and complexity of the digestive system: Goats have a four-compartment stomach designed specifically for digesting fiber-rich food. The size of the four compartments changes with growth. Babies' stomach compartments are very small and therefore dependent on liquids, but as they develop and start eating solids, the rumen becomes larger as it is more active and because of this the other compartments also grow. In the rumen the organisms accumulate the proteins and all the vitamin B that the goat needs. Once the food has been broken down into smaller particles it passes into the second chamber called the lattice. All items unusual in the goat's diet are placed in this compartment. The particles that have fermented pass into the omasum, this removes water for food and absorbs nutrients which help provide the goat with energy, these are called volatile fatty acids. The particles then move into the so-called stomach proper, where the digestion process becomes similar to that of humans because the food is then digested by stomach acids. The remaining particles are moved to the small intestine where most of the nutrients are absorbed by the body. Venous blood from the pancreas, spleen, small intestine, and stomach all goes into the portal vein. In this way the liver receives everything that has been absorbed from... half the paper... from meat, from small hippos and fish to zebras and big cats. (Goosey, 2007)Dental formula and total dentition: from 5-5-5 to 5-5-6/7 (Corfe, 2013)How the animal adapts to its diet in terms of:Shape and size of the teeth: the Crocodiles do not chew, they simply tear or tear the flesh and then swallow it so much that they have needle-like teeth. (Anon., 2013)Length and complexity of the digestive system: the crocodile tears food and then swallows it. The digestive system has two chambers, one is a powerful muscular compartment and the other is highly acidic. In the stomach, a very strong acid helps break down meat and bones. (Anon., n.d.) Stomach pH: Low stomach pH of 1.2-2.5 Eating habits - how much eaten and how often it eats: a crocodile can go 58 days without eating by surviving on stored fat. A crocodile should eat a maximum of half its body weight. (Anon., 2013)
