Book Report on Cultural Awareness in ChinaIntroductionI chose the book On China by Henry Kissinger to analyze the country I was assigned because it was a fairly new book. Su Cina was written in 2011, the information in the book was relevant, up-to-date and easy to understand. Over the last few months of the Marshal Basic Course we have been introduced to numerous tools that help us during the Targeting process. One of the tools we used was the acronym PMESII-PT (political, military, economic, social, information, infrastructure, physical environment and time). This acronym is used to analyze a specific operating environment for a certain area. The focus of my analysis of the book On China concerns the PMESII-PT and I have used this concept to break down my book into specific areas that will allow for better interpretation and understanding of the country. The history of China has several regional centers of origin. The country boasts the oldest civilizations in the world. The country's history reveals transformations in diplomacy, strategy and techniques that the country has applied to gain global power in the current century. Therefore, understanding the country's cultural history must first involve understanding the country's rich history from what was then called the Middle Kingdom to the present day. The rise and fall of various dynasties, their limited level of cultural openness to the outside world, and the level of social harmony maintained in Chinese society have marked the country's history. The history of the country dates back 4000 years and is unique with its philosophy and arts. The political, military, economic, social, In......middle of paper......analysis to be conducted. I will strongly argue that this book has aided me in my professional development by helping me understand the cultural differences between the United States and China, thus improving my overall knowledge of the country. I believe military leaders at all levels should take part in some type of cultural reading/analysis. As leaders of today's military we should have general knowledge of other countries, especially economically and military led ones. Reading this book definitely showed my weakness or lack of knowledge about the country of China. I will also argue that all reading lists should have a cultural book about China in their reading list, this will only enhance and educate our strengths if we are able to understand other countries.
