The systems approach is based on the fundamental principle that all aspects of a human problem should be treated together in a rational way (Healy, 2005). I have divided this essay into relevant sections that cover an overview of systems ideas, general systems theory, and ecological systems theory. This assignment will also include Germain and Gitterman's life model and will be related to the case study provided. The limitations of systems theory will also be discussed. System Ideas refers to three different types of systems, each created in a different era; general systems theory, ecosystem perspectives and complex systems theory (Healy, 2005). Systemic ideas in social work originated with general systems theory in the 1940s and 1950s, formulated by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy in the 1970s (Payne, 2005). System ideas are very relevant to human related professions such as; doctors, social workers and other institutions. Systems theory helps social workers find an individual's “fit” and “fit” with the current society (Payne, 2005). There are many people involved in an individual's social system, from friends and family to institutions such as schools and doctors. These can also be placed into further categories of formal and informal theories. Formal theories consist of systems such as institutions such as social workers and doctors, but informal theories include friends, family, and community. In complex situations, systems ideas and theory are more appropriate to use than other, more casual models of practice. Three waves of systems theory have been developed (Healy, 2005). The first wave, being general systems theory. General systems theory is about focusing on a social order that is most effective for the client,...... middle of paper... ap helped me identify Mrs Clarkes' formal and informal systems around her and relationships that they took. Using the ecomap helped me identify which systems need strengthening in Mrs. Clarke's life. It was clear that the use of systems theory in the case study was helpful for the client to identify the best possible outcome. Works CitedGermain, C., Gitterman, A. (1996).
