The world was created with humans, humans created by God are imperfect and make decisions that may not be the best for that and/or other individuals. One of the mistakes humans make is crime on others. Some crimes are more dangerous than others. Many authors have some type of crime as their theme due to the heavy impact it has on our society and the people who live in it. F. Scott Fitzgerald beautifully illustrates organized crime in the 1920s, in his novel The Great Gatsby, and how it was a key influential factor during the Jazz Age. When we look at Jay Gatsby in the book it is never clear to us exactly what he is doing. or what's going on. Whether or not Gatsby is involved in some type of organized crime. The important thing is to first know what organized crime is. When most people look at "organized crime," they see it for what it exactly is, "organized crime," which isn't exactly the best definition. The online dictionary defines organized crime as "underworld organizations" (WordNet). Which could be interpreted in many different ways due to the general definition. The United Nations on Drugs and Crime talked about organized crime in their article "Organized Crime", stating that organized crime is not stagnant and adapts as new crimes emerge, as relationships become more flexible, sophisticated and reach the world. Organized crime is constantly evolving, so it is difficult to give a definition. However, the UNODC has developed a definition of an organized criminal group as; three or more persons formed non-randomly, existing for a certain period of time, and acting in concert with the purpose of committing one or more crimes punishable by four or more years of incarnation, and with the aim of obtaining, directly or indirectly a financier...half a doc...admit it...he doesn't want trouble with anyone" (Fitzgerald 48). This separates Gatsby from other gangsters and organized crime members of the time, they wouldn't care if people feared them or they hated them. Not Gatsby, Gatsby always cared about his image Because we were created with free will, we decide what we want to do with our lives, what we want to accomplish. Many people accomplish the same things as everyone else What distinguishes people is how they succeed, whether they were born into it, like Daisy, whether they worked hard and honestly for it, like Dan Cody, or whether they cheated others to get to the top like Jay of jazz many people were involved in cheating others through organized crime, making it a big problem. Organized crime seemed to be the center of the 1920s and The Great Gatsby did a great job illustrating this to the world.
