“The American Dream” is a lifestyle that myriads of people determinedly try to achieve and work towards with their entire being. It is, essentially, the concept of improving your life purpose. In Lorraine Hansberry's play Raisin in the Sun, the characters' perceptions of the "American Dream" are very different and often conflict with each other. The Younger family struggles to break the metaphorical chains of poverty to create a better situation for them. The conflicting visions of the “American Dream” that contribute to the family's financial and social journey are represented by the characters Mama, Walter, and Benetha.
