The Rights You Have Simply Because You Are HumanEvery single human being on this planet has rights (What are Human Rights, n.d.). These rights are given to us from birth and the day I was asked what my human rights were, I was speechless. I didn't know how to answer the question, which seemed so easy at the time. I had forgotten about the question that had left me so perplexed and simply ignored it, ironically six months later I received an assignment on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After reading this historical document, I understood how important human rights are. I think most people take human rights for granted, we know they exist, but we don't even know what they are and what they entail. This made me think a lot about the rights we all have and how companies, schools and communities around the world incorporate most, if not all, of these rights into their policies. What are human rights? Well, to help understand this question, I have divided “human” and “rights”. A human being is a member of the species Homo sapiens; a man, a woman or a child; a person (human being, n.d.). So we can assume that this means every living person on the planet. Rights are things to which you are entitled or permitted; guaranteed freedoms (What are human rights, n.d.). We can also assume that this means freedoms that are guaranteed to us and that will never be taken away from us. So, to conclude, what are human rights, human rights are the rights that you have simply because you are human (What are Human Rights, n.d.). When we look at the past, there was no specific document that explained human rights, in fact there were no human rights. It literally took decades and decades of struggle between civilizations and countries...... middle of paper ......f Human Rights Video | What are human rights? : United for Human Rights."
