Topic > The cycle of artistic creation: the director's analysis...

Photographer Elliot Erwitt once stated: “For me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with how you see them." This quote guided me deeply in my analysis of what I call a cycle of artistic creation. When you pay close attention to the artwork of a particular artist, you are able to distinguish certain details that demonstrate that it is the artist's work. It is significant to me to be able to assert an artist as their own rather than just a person following the trend. Every artist, whether they realize it or not, has a series of repercussions in their art; there are details that keep reappearing in their work that make their style distinctive. When creating art, everything is drawn from this sea of experiences that the artist may not realize they are continually using, making this cycle of artistic creation. It is the smallest details that can be established that truly make it a 'work of art. By exploring the video works of director and filmmaker Todd Cole, I was able to analyze the characteristics that establish his distinctive style. It has a particular rhythm just like music, dance and movement have a particular rhythm. In her fashion film "Honor", the model is featured in a landscape that creates a perfect atmosphere. It's about noticing that little movement she makes, holding that pulse, causing tension, and from there the film feels completely and naturally orchestrated. I have always been fascinated by the simple beauty that surrounds us. As I grew up, I learned that art was not only beautiful, but was an influential way to show others the beauty I saw in the world.
