With backpacks in tow and pencils in hand, college students walk across campus with the stress of taking the test, barely thinking about their safety. Such was the case on a clear Tuesday at the University of Texas, September 28, 2010. Students fled a masked gunman carrying an AK-47 and shooting randomly on campus. Nineteen-year-old Colton Tooley, wearing a black mask, eventually killed himself in the library. Amazingly, no one else was injured or killed. (MSNBC) This was not the case in 1966, when 16 people were killed and 32 injured by a gunman in the UT clock tower. Debate is still ongoing over allowing concealed weapons on college campuses in Texas, despite a recent bill failing to pass. The right to bear arms under the United States Constitutional Second Amendment is obviously a strong argument for gun advocates. Continued campus violence involving firearms brings out strong emotions within staunch gun control advocates. On May 30, 2011, HB 1167, authored by Van Taylor (R-Plano) was killed in the Texas House of Representatives. The bill would force colleges and universities to allow students over the age of 21 to carry concealed weapons on campus. (Sayani) (woods). Texas concealed weapons laws would apply; the holder must be at least 21 years old, pass a thorough background check, display gun safety at a shooting range and have a clean 15-year law enforcement history. The bill has sparked controversy among groups such as The Texas State Rifle Association and Students for Gun-Free Schools in Texas. The state of Texas has a cowboy reputation.
