"The Hunger Games" is a science fiction novel written by American author Suzanne Collins and published in 2008. A film adaptation directed by Gary Ross was published in 2012 Although some film adaptations differ greatly from the original stories presented in the books, this adaptation follows the development of the plot in unusually detailed detail. However, some changes have been made that affect our perception of the film. “The Hunger Games” features a variety of science fiction features that confirm its place in this genre. The plot is set in the dystopian, post-apocalyptic society of Panem which "rose from the ashes of the place that was once called North America" (Collins). We can only speculate about the year because no exact reference is given, other than the fact that the seventy-fourth Hunger Games are about to begin. Another science fiction theme is the advancement of technology, which allows for genetic engineering and mutation. There are many examples of such "lab-generated" modifications (Collins) that are usually used as weapons, such as the tracker jacker or mockingjay. The mutants are by far the deadliest and demonstrate how far the Gamemakers are willing to go to turn the wild concept of the games into an entertaining spectacle for the Capitol: “The audience in the Capitol will be bored, claiming that these games are bordering on dullness. This is the one thing the Games should not do” (Collins). Furthermore, to create a virtual reality, which the arena actually is, a high level of science is required. This is explicitly demonstrated in the film, when a Stratego creates a hologram of a mutant dog and places it in the arena, where it instantly materializes. The author found great inspiration... middle of paper... resting on the balls of his feet. Overall, the differences between the book and the film adaptation are few, but if you have read the book before watching the film, some things, such as the simplification of the mutant incident, stand out. In my opinion, the book is better because, thanks to the first-person narrator, Katniss, her state of mind and how she deals with the different difficulties that are part of her dystopian world are the focus. History vividly shows that if human beings are endangered by something, regardless of the historical period in which they live, they will resort to obstinacy and courage to defend themselves and their loved ones and to fight for their beliefs. Of course, it all boils down to the survival of the fittest. Works CitedCollins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games. PDF files. Network. May 19, 2014. http://www.extralargeprint.org/Hunger-Games-18.pdf
