After the United States of America expanded westward into what is now California, we were still greedy. We started trying to conquer small islands and territories that we could easily dominate and control. In the Supreme Court decision, Downes v. Bidwell, the ruling states that any territory we acquire, we can govern it and we can imprint our culture on it (Document H). This court case statement shows how the United States managed to acquire territories and force people to accept the “American way”. In the early 1900s the United States had one of the largest navies in the world. It was known as the Great White Fleet because we paraded ships around the world simply by showing off our firepower. Using these huge ships we were able to dominate and dictate any battle at sea. This was shown in Interest of America Sea Power by Alfred T. Manhan. This source talks about how we should keep Hawaii and Haiti away from foreigners just so we can use their ports for our own trading and shipping purposes (Document C).
