Every year, millions of children are abused and neglected around the world. Child abuse is a global concern. It has serious consequences for the children who fall victim to it and the effects are often long-lasting. Child abuse is a highly underreported crime, although among those reported, neglect accounts for the majority of child abuse cases (Pala, Ünalacak, & Ünlüoğlu, 2011). Child neglect often has more dire consequences than other types of child abuse (DePanfilis, Children's Bureau, & Office on Child Abuse & Neglect, 2006). A particularly common consequence in neglected children is insecurity or lack of attachment to the primary caregiver. John Bowlby's research demonstrated the developmental importance of childhood attachments, further research shows that childhood attachment styles carry over into adulthood (Levine & Heller, 2011). Neglected children have shown disturbed attachments that manifest in developmental delays and behavioral problems. Through treatment, neglected children aim to learn how to create secure attachments (Hardy, 2007). Definition of NeglectNumerous teachers, family doctors, social workers, among other professionals will face child abuse and will have the responsibility to report mistreatment. Therefore, it is important that these specialists are able to recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect (Pala, et al, 2011). The World Health Organization Consultation on the Prevention of Child Abuse currently recognizes four types of child abuse: physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. Dr. Bengü Pala and his colleagues found that neglect accounted for up to 71 percent of child abuse cases in 2008 worldwide. They defined neglect as a parent or caregiver's prioritization of not providing for the child's development and well-being... the focus of the article... on emotional regulation and stability (Hardy, 2007). From 2000 to 2004, 7.6 out of 1,000 children were reported as abandoned. The third national study on the incidence of child abuse and neglect found that less than one-third of child maltreatment is reported. Signs of neglect can often be subtle and difficult for other adults to recognize; this is attributed to the underreporting of negligence cases (DePanfilis, et al., 2006). Given that child abuse afflicts millions of children each year and that millions more suffer in silence, it is important to improve research on this dilemma. Numerous studies acknowledge the absence of research on attachment theory in neglected children (Venet et al.). It is imperative that research into attachment disorders advances dramatically so that effective treatments can be developed that allow neglected children to heal..
