There are many different careers in the world. One of the largest career fields is medicine. The medical field consists of many different jobs, some of which are physical therapists, surgeons, pediatricians, nurses, and anesthesiologists. All of these jobs help people when they are sick, injured, or recovering. Being a surgeon is one of the most difficult jobs in medicine. Becoming a surgeon is a long journey filled with many hours of hard work, but if you find saving people's lives rewarding, then it is the perfect occupation. Neurosurgeons, cardiovascular surgeons, and general surgeons are just a few of the different types of surgeons who practice in the medical field. “Neurosurgery is the surgical specialty that deals with the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord” (Heisler). Neurosurgeons help by performing some of the most complicated and stressful surgeries. “Cardiovascular surgery is surgery in the area of ​​the heart and chest or both” (Heisler). Cardiovascular surgeons perform operations such as heart transplants, artery replacement, valve replacement, and bypass surgery, just to name a few. The average cardiovascular surgeon performs approximately 150 CABGs, which is the term for bypass surgery, per year (Eisenhower; Cohn). “General surgery is the surgical specialty that focuses primarily on the abdominal organs” (Heisler). Although they are called general surgeons, these men and women are very skilled. They usually work on appendicitis, hernias, gallbladder surgeries, stomach and intestinal problems (Heisler). All these types of surgeons work in well-equipped, lighted and ventilated sterile operating rooms ("Doctors and Surgeons"). Most surgeons work in hospitals. They can work in a hospital or… be halfway… rewarding, so being a surgeon can be the perfect occupation. With the different types of surgeons there are many options a person can choose from. In addition to the good salary he can earn, a surgeon has the ability to work at different times and in different locations. Although the journey to becoming a surgeon is filled with several educational steps and long hours of hard work, being a surgeon is a rewarding occupation for those who put in the work necessary to become a surgeon.
