With most units understaffed, prison gangs and prison violence are difficult to control in these types of places. A national study concluded that assaults by guarded inmates were 49 percent more frequent in private prisons than in government-run ones. It was also stated in this study that “for-profit prisons” have more problems maintaining safety in their prisons. That said, “for-profit prisons” experience significantly more escapes, murders, and assaults than government-run prisons. All of these things make working in this type of environment very scary for guards and other staff and could potentially make employees more reluctant to deal with a situation that they may see or know is dangerous or unsafe for inmates. The poor living conditions and lack of security within these prisons are worsening due to the high demand for private prisons. This type of practice is not good. It caused great sacrifices but little gain for the public. Private prisons need to be better monitored and strictly regulated by the government in order to maintain a safe housing unit for inmates.
