As the client progresses through diseased fluid, intake is monitored. The client should avoid salty foods because salt may contribute to hypertension. Water-based liquids such as broth, gelatin, popsicles, ice cream, watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, and celery should be avoided. The patient should follow a low-protein diet especially before dialysis. Your provider may recommend a protein diet of 1 gram per day. Foods that contain a good source of protein include fruits, breads, grains, and vegetables. These foods provide energy, fiber, minerals and vitamins. If the client is losing weight, he or she should consume enough calories because this prevents the breakdown of body tissues. Fat is a good source of calories and one example is olive oil. Conversely, if the client is overweight, he or she should limit carbohydrate intake. Furthermore, dairy products should be limited because they are rich in phosphorus. It causes calcium to be lost from bones, making them weaker and can cause them to break. To balance calcium and phosphorus, calcium supplements are accompanied by vitamin D. Low-phosphorus foods include tub margarine, butter, cream cheese, heavy cream, cottage cheese, sherbet and whipped toppings. Finally, the client should also balance his potassium intake by consuming fruits such as peaches, pears, cherries, apples, berries, pineapple, plums,
