Mia is what we would call "an old soul", and because of that she is so thoughtful and deep that it's hard not to become attached to the character. The book is narrated in the first person by Mia herself, so that as she wanders around the hospital and tries to figure out what exactly is going on, we know as much as she does. However, the narrative is innovative in telling not only the present, but also the intervals between the various flashbacks of his past. These glimpses of what happened before the accident are what tells us about her old life, her family, her friend Kim, and her love for Adam. Due to her serious accident, Mia entered comma. During the entire period of her comma, her feelings towards her boyfriend have changed drastically. At the beginning of the story she felt a deep love for her boyfriend, but towards the end things changed as she didn't have the same feelings for her boyfriend as she did at the beginning. This suggests that Mia is a dynamic character. Mia was confused about her relationship with Adams as she was unsure of the direction of their relationship with him. Mia intended to attend Juilliard in New York; on the other hand, Adams wanted to stay in Oregon. This created fear in Mia and she was afraid that the distance would eventually separate them. At one point, Mia decided to try another instrument instead of the cello to please her parents. Since her family was against her and everyone loved rock music. Therefore, she also decided to follow in her parents' footsteps. But when Mia falls in love with Adam and becomes close to him, he advises her not to abandon the cello. Kim also played an important role in convincing Mia to continue playing the cello.
