Although this story is set in the 1950s, racism and prejudice continue to exist in today's society. Many people are still judged for their race, age, family, sexual orientation, etc. Of course racism has improved a lot today, however it still exists. Some Caucasians are still strongly opposed to racial equality. No matter how many people try to suppress it, there will always be people against it. The Youngers deal with this throughout the game and continue to overcome everything that is thrown at them. “We have to face the fact that some say you fight fire better with fire, but we say you put out fire better with water. We say that racism cannot be fought with racism. We will fight racism with solidarity” (Fred Hamptom).
