Introducing the concept of tolerance, the study discovered how marriage functions as a place where tolerance must function and actually operates in a way that nullifies the potential threat from other stigmatized. On the premise of cultural inferiority, foreign boyfriends and girlfriends are essentialized with their culture, they are degraded and partially welcomed for their supposed innocence and traditionalism. Since culture is blamed for every conflict participants have, it becomes important just how much understanding “we” can show to this different culture. Therefore, the factors involved in postulating cultural inferiority and enacting tolerance are not articulated. The white race can remain privileged by keeping the hegemonic power of the racial, ethnic and gender system invisible and forcing tolerance. Since the privileged white race is legitimized in this way as a moral attribute of tolerance, the unequal power structure in terms of race, ethnicity and gender in the postcolonial context within our society can be maintained.
